How can we help find safe, educational toys for girls and boys with daily horror stories and recalls by the big stores?  That was the question Jean and Andrew grappled with early in the summer of 2007.  We learned what everyone knows by now – 84 percent of toys sold to American families these days come from China or other countries where standards and oversight may be less strict than our own. 

We searched from coast to coast for real toy makers and found a half dozen American firms still supplying child-safe toys and children's furniture.  Most are still churning out toys that we and our children used.  Most are wooden, strong, and safety-tested toys.  They have demonstrated their child attractiveness and also their ability to serve generations of children as heirlooms.  Our wooden toys are either safely unpainted or are painted with American-made, non-toxic paints.  Paints in the US have been lead-free by law since the 1970’s.  Personalized toys can feature the child's name!
